This booklet contains several ways of helping pupils to approach problem solving in KS3 mathematics lessons. It is limited in its scope and only explores some of the available material. In the appendix you will find references to other approaches. All mathematics questions are about solving problems. In this booklet we are specifically looking at questions that are provided in the form of words and consider strategies which might help pupils translate the words into mathematics.

  • 2016 Pupil Progress Meetings in Action

Pupil Progress Meetings (PPM) provide a regular timetabled forum for analysis and discussion of the factors that have supported pupil progress and identifies, collaboratively, actions that overcome barriers to learning.

They require teachers to share evidence drawn from their day to day and periodic assessments. The meetings provide a forum to answer questions posed by the data within pupil tracking and enable schools to move tracking off the page into actions for learning. They also provide an opportunity to demonstrate and celebrate success. .

  • KS2 2016 Wallplanner

2016 National Curriculum Tests New for 2016 The new national curriculum will be assessed for the first time in May 2016. Test outcomes will no longer be reported using levels. Scaled scores will be used instead. There will be 1 set of tests for each subject. They will include a small number of questions designed to assess the most able pupils, so separate tests are no longer required. An arithmetic test now replaces the mental mathematics test. Schools may consider entering pupils for some, or all of the tests, early. Where a pupil does not take all of the tests early, they may take the other tests in future years. The biennial science sampling tests will take place from Monday 6 June until Friday 17 June. Tests will be administered in selected schools by external administrators. Participation is statutory for schools selected to take part. Schools (except participating independent schools) don’t need to order standard materials as orders will be based on autumn census data. 2016 sample test materials are available on www.gov.uk/sta

  • Government response: Commission on Assessment without Levels

When we developed the new national curriculum, it became clear that levels were not sufficiently aligned with its content, aims and ethos. We are grateful to the Commission for setting out the problems generated by levels and for highlighting the improvements in practice that can be gained by schools developing their own approaches to assessment that are more closely tailored to meet the needs of their curriculum, pupils and staff.

  • Final Report of the Commission on Assessment without Levels September 2015

Attainment targets and levels were introduced with the national curriculum in 1988. When the new national curriculum was published in 2014, new forms of assessment were developed to align with its content and principles. From September 2015, national curriculum levels will no longer be used for statutory assessments. The Commission on Assessment Without Levels was set up to provide advice and support to schools in developing new approaches to their own in-school assessment and to ensure they have information to make informed choices about what might work for their pupils, staff and curriculum.
